PP, Frelimo hold talks

Malawi’s ruling People’s Party (PP) and Mozambique’s ruling party, Frelimo, on Monday held talks in Blantyre as one way of promoting the two parties’ interests.

PP acting secretary general Paul Maulidi said in an interview the sharing of experiences on political campaign, election processes, economic and political situations between the two parties should not be viewed with suspicion.

He said it is PP’s policy to maintain good relationship with neighbouring countries.

“As a party, we also have a relationship with China. This clearly shows how we handle our international relations. Last month, I was in the United Kingdom where the Conservatives called us and we also established a relationship with the Democratic Party.

“Three weeks ago, we were in Ghana and two weeks ago, I was in Lesotho establishing a relationship there. So it is not a new thing,” he said.

Frelimo member of National Commission, Sergio Kamunga, Pantie said there is a need for the two parties to work together.

“We share the same culture, boundaries and many interests with the Malawian people. We are neighbouring countries, so we are bound to work together to provide solutions for the development of our countries.

“We have exchanged a lot of information regarding Malawi’s situation, PP’s situation and we also brought our outlook on the Mozambique election and the presidential election we are going to hold next year,” he said.

Pantie said political parties are very important for the maintenance of democracy; therefore, it is important that such meetings be held on a regular basis.
